She Turned
A main reason Mrs. Thatcher was elected with a large majority in May 1979 was she said she would control immigration. But within days she allowed thousands of Vietnamese who had gone to Hong Kong to settle in the UK. And a couple of months later she allowed tens of thousands of Iranians to settle in the UK. She didn't keep her election promise to stop foreign men using marriage to live here. The result is hundreds of thousands of men are living in these islands.
Mrs. Thatcher won the 1983 election on the back of the Falklands Conflict.
Her most famous words were "The lady is not for turning.
She was given what amounted to a state funeral.
Now immigration has taken the UK out of the EU.
And Spain cooperates with Argentina over the Falklands....

Some Vietnamese travelled overland to get to Hong Kong. The Chinese demanded that all Vietnamese be out of Hong Kong before they took over in 1997.
Strikingly, the Iranians perceived the Iron Lady to be brittle. Of all the countries in the world thousands chose to come to the UK. Perversely, their numbers may have helped them. On 12 August 1979 my Japanese girl friend and I were refused entry by British immigration officers. Please see this blog "Inhuman Wrongs" in 2008.
